7:15 pm - Why SOPA is dangerous, an explanation of the bill
Originally posted by [info]nyxmidnight at Why SOPA is dangerous, an explanation of the bill
Why SOPA is dangerous
To Sum Up
SOPA:
  • Gives the government the right to unilaterally censor foreign websites.
  • Gives copyright holders the right to issue economic takedowns and bring lawsuits against website owners and operators, if those websites have features that make it possible to post infringing content. [A comment feature is enough.]
  • Makes it a felony offense to post a copyrighted song or video.

This bill turns us all into criminals. If it passes, then you either stop using the Internet, or you simply hope that you never end up in the crosshairs, because if you’re targeted, you will be destroyed by this bill. You don’t have to be a big, mean, nasty criminal — common Internet usage is effectively criminalized under this law. This bill will kill American innovation and development of the Internet, as it will become too risky to do anything of value. It is toxic and dangerous, and should not, under any circumstances, be supported.

5:37 pm - A Box of Letters and Six Roses
A 1968 Epistolary Love Story - I've carried a box of letters around for 35 years - letters from Mary (mom) to John (dad) while he was a Marine in Viet Nam. I saved them from mom's grief-purge in 1976. I've never read them - until now. They are amazing.

11:22 am - With each breath I take...
"Well, I'm gonna get out of bed every morning... breathe in and out all day long. Then, after a while I won't have to remind myself to get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out..." (From Sleepless in Seattle.)

My mother, Mary E. Atkins, an amazing feminist and social justice activist for nearly half a century, died Saturday. There are no words to describe the void left.

I sat beside her bed, holding her hand and singing to her for the last two days of her life. To say that my mother and I were close would be an extreme understatement. My dad died when I was 13. That left mom with four children to raise and I am the eldest. Mom and I took care of each other and my sisters. Mom was my friend, my ally, my teacher, my mentor and so much more.

One of my mother's favorite songs about our relationship was, "You and Me Agaisnt the World" by Helen Reddy:

You and me against the world
Sometimes it seems like you and me against the world
When all the others turn their backs and walk away
You can count on my to stay

And when one of us is gone
And one of us is left to carry on
Then remembering will have to do
Our memories alone will get us through
Think about the days of me and you
You and me against the world

11:10 pm - BASCon 11 - Bay Area Slash Convention
I'll be attending BASCon again this year, November 4-6.

This year I will also be giving two presentations:

Erotic Writing – It’s more than writing sex. (Saturday, Nov. 5, 1-2 PM)
Some sex writing sound little better than read stereo instructions (Insert tab A in slot B), Learn what it take to make writing about sex meltingly hot.

Switching – Fan-fiction and Pro-writing. (Saturday, Nov. 5, 2-3 PM)
Some tips for fan writers who want to become paid authors. It’s not always an either/or. Some of us switch both ways.

Anyone else going? I'd love to hear form you.

11:10 pm - Happy Anniversary [info]aveeno_baby
Happy 5th Anniversary [info]aveeno_baby

Five years ago today, I was cast as Draco Malfoy in an online Harry Potter role playing game. [info]aveeno_baby was cast as Harry Potter. Here is a transcript of the first words we ever exchanged:

Session Start (slashpervert:aveeno_baby): Sun Oct 01 21:54:41 2006
[21:54] slashpervert: Hi Harry
[21:55] aveeno_baby: Hi, Draco!
[21:55] slashpervert: Grins
[21:56] aveeno_baby: heheh, we're going to have fun!
[21:56] slashpervert: Yes.
[21:56] slashpervert: We are.

Not only did we have fun in the RPG, we quickly started writing our own stories together. Since then we have written dozens of Harry Potter stories and just as many original stories. We write nearly every day together and have for the entire five years. Co-authoring never ceases push me and excite me.

Thank you, [info]aveeno_baby. You are an amazing friend and I treasure our relationship.

10:37 pm - Long days but very exciting.
Just a quick note to let folks know I'm still alive. I have been working 12-hours days as publisher of the indie start-up ForibddenFiction.com.

It's hard work and quite a challenge to pull the team together. It's amazing getting to help develop and promote the careers of new authors, some of whom I have adored in fandom.

For example, we currently have books in development that any reader of this journal would love:

Deliver Us by Lynn Kelling ([info]lynn_kelling aka [info]blynnk) - A smokin' hot m/m BDSM romance.
Whatever the Cost by Lynn Kelling - Two male prostitutes find love helps them in their struggle to change their lives.

House of Silence - Volumes 1 & 2 by J.A. Jaken (aka [info]rushlight75) - The House of Silence is a place of fantasies and secrets. A group of male prostitutes who have found shelter there are challenged to confront their pasts and work together, discovering a sense of belonging.

Oh, and so many more! A fantasy m/m slavefic? A lesbian PI? So many wonderful stories in progress but I can't tell you about all of them yet.

We still have Free Memberships available on the site: ForbiddenFiction.com

And you can see our fundraising project video on IndieGoGo. (And yes, that's me with the purple hair in the video.)

If you know anyone in the SF Bay Area looking for an Editorial/Marketing Internship.

I still work on fan fiction to relax. There are a couple projects in the works. None posting soon though. I've got to finish editing our some of my own original fiction as well so I can also submit them to FFP! (Yes, even I would have to go though submissions and editing!)

12:35 am - Sticky Thanks and an Art Rec!
THANKS: Oh, thank you so much for all the chocolate. I was so distracted last week (and resting from another bought of tendinitis), I completely missed the mark of chocolate heads. Thanks to: [info]mugglegato, [info]ineffably_roma, [info]nightlo, [info]neptuneschild1, [info]ariannagray, [info]nimielle, [info]brissygirl, [info]thepretender501, [info]lijahlover, [info]anisaex, [info]dazzle43, [info]uniquepov, [info]treacle_tartlet, [info]geinahop, [info]flamingolady, [info]kayoko, [info]khasael, [info]sabinefrappe, [info]isisanubis, [info]misbehavingmom, [info]talekayler, [info]katelinmr, and [info]kitty_fic!

And another thank you to [info]kayoko for making an icon for my series about Scorpius (and the shorts)!

ART REC: Wow, I know most H/D folks have probably already seen this, but I loved He Comes at Night (H/D NWS art) by savagesnakes. This reminded me of our vampire Draco story In the Dark.

And when I finish this post, I will work on getting the next piece of fiction posted!

5:26 am - We went, we saw and we were fans! Musing on DH2
I had the wonderful privilege of seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part Two, with some of my favourite people today -- including my amazing son (for whom I first began reading HP), the ever Snarky Husband#2, my dear friend and sometime beta [info]worthyadvisor, fellow Wizarding Tea participant [info]shyfoxling and her partner. Of all the films, the two DH ones were ones I enjoyed most. Probably because of how disappointed I was with book seven. The films seemed able to fix many of the things that bothered me most about the text.

Several folks have asked if I would cry when I saw the film and I was perplexed. I'm really not a "cry at the movies" or at endings type of person. But I came close. I certainly got misty eyed in several places, especially Severus' death and the pensieve back scenes.

After the film we came back to drink mead (seriously, my family brews it) and talk about the film, going into what we have liked/disliked about both this film and the rest of the HP experience.

Most of the things I liked about the film were the changes that made it tighter than the book and gave us more action. Most of the things I didn't like were the fault of the text. I don't usually expect a movie to follow the original novel, usually considering them AU. In this case, that was a plus not a deterrent.

I have to admit to one strangest things for me was personal. There were a couple things in the film that were additions -- things that were definitely not part of JKR's canon -- but were still very familiar. Why? They were eerie for me because they were exactly The Bound Prince "canon."

Behind cut for DH & slight BP4 spoilers )

One of the weird funny things of the day, was our "pinkies up" sign during the movie. I injured my right thumb by spending too much of my time this last week editing (tendinitis from track ball stress) and have been told try not to use my thumb until it heals. (Insert eye roll here because I'm find it impossible.) So, since couldn't give anything a "thumbs up" without pain, I started doing a "pinky up" instead and it became the "joke of the day." It's one I may have to adopt.

I was so jazzed up that I let [info]kitty_fic draw me into a "word war" and finished another instalment of the Belonging, or The Shorts, series. I'll post #4 of that series Monday and probably the fifth sometime soon after.

11:37 pm - REMINDER - This journal is intended for those 18 and over.
If a user explains that they are under18 in either their profile, posts or email to me, I have no other option but to ban that user.

From my Frequently Asked Questions page:

Why do you say a person has to be age eighteen or over to read this journal?

United States law. I could be prosecuted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and other similar charges, if I knowingly allowed someone under age eighteen to read my sexually explicit fiction.
